Southern Cross Medical Care Society welcomed a new Director at the Annual General Meeting held in Christchurch yesterday.

Items of business included the election of new Director Dr Philip Leightley, who replaces retiring Director Dr Doug Baird.

Dr Leightley brings a wealth of experience to the board having worked as a specialist anaesthetist for 25 years as well as serving on a range of hospital committees.

“We’re pleased to welcome Philip to the board,” said chairman Greg Gent. “He brings a strong record of governance experience in the private sector and will ensure the board continues to have strong medical knowledge and insight.”

Other resolutions passed included:

• Annual Report received by members of the Society.
• Appointment of Roger France as a Trustee – filling the vacancy created by the retirement of Keith Taylor. While stepping down as a Trustee, Mr Taylor stays on as a Director.
• Elizabeth Hickey re-elected as a Director. Ms Hickey retired by rotation and, being eligible, offered herself for re-election.

About Dr Philip Leightley:

Dr Philip Leightley is a practicing medical professional who has worked in Auckland as a specialist anaesthetist since 1987, including 25 years in the private sector.

He also has extensive governance and administration experience, including chairing and serving on a range of hospital committees. He was a founding shareholder and then director of the Auckland Surgical Centre which was purchased by Southern Cross Hospitals in 2005.

His extensive medical and governance background in the private health sector will enable him to provide a valuable perspective as the Society’s board addresses opportunities to work with the medical profession to create and deliver value for Members.
